Our
Story
How It Started
Our relationship started at a local farmers market where Chicago area nuns sold their pastry items. We struck up a conversation which continued and when the nuns were relocated to Haiti to work at L’Orphange Notre Dane the relationship grew and the opportunity presented itself to help.
Through a simple sign up genius we have been able to accomplish so much. We are thankful to our amazing Elmhurst community (and surrounding areas) and family. We have been able to collect pallets of food and clothing and ship to Haiti since 2020. Despite theft at the border, earthquakes and shipping delays due to covid we continued to communicate with head nun Sister Marie and persevere in securing items for over 200 children ages newborn to 18.
The stories from the border are intense, with border patrol opening crates to check for “contraband” only to steal food intended for the orphanage. With practice we learned to ship in used crates and put old clothing and newspapers inside to disguise the valuable cargo hidden underneath intended for these children.
